LEVIK (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the website levik.me (the “Site”). LEVIK is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit or interact with the Site, how that information is used, the choices available to you regarding your data, and the rights you have under applicable data protection laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
By using the Site, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please discontinue use of the Site.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information in the following ways:
Information you voluntarily provide:
- Your email address when you subscribe to the newsletter
- Your name, email address, and message when you contact us through the contact form
- Your name, email address, and comment content if you leave a comment on a blog post
- Any information you choose to share in direct correspondence with us
- Note about SmartBite Balance app: SmartBite Balance is a separate mobile application available through the Apple App Store. It does not transmit any data to LEVIK’s servers, does not require an account, and is governed by its own dedicated Privacy Policy. See Section 6 below for details and links.
Information collected automatically:
- IP address (may be anonymized by our analytics provider)
- Browser type, version, and language
- Device type, operating system, and screen resolution
- Pages visited, time spent on pages, and navigation patterns
- Referring website or source that brought you to the Site
- Approximate geographic location (country or region level, not precise)
- Date and time of your visit
We do not collect sensitive personal information such as financial data, medical records, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, or biometric data on our servers.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To respond to your messages, questions, and enquiries
- To send newsletters and updates if you have subscribed
- To improve the Site, its content, and user experience
- To understand how visitors use the Site through aggregated analytics
- To maintain the security, integrity, and functionality of the Site
- To detect, prevent, and address technical issues or misuse
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.
3. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or other regions with similar data protection laws, we rely on the following legal bases to process your personal data:
- Consent: When you subscribe to the newsletter, submit a contact form, or leave a comment. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests: To operate, secure, and improve the Site, understand how it is used, prevent fraud or abuse, and respond to your direct communications. We balance our legitimate interests against your rights and freedoms.
- Legal obligation: When processing is necessary to comply with a legal requirement (e.g., responding to a lawful request from authorities).
- Contractual necessity: If you ever purchase a product or service from us in the future, we may process data to fulfill our contractual obligations.
4. Newsletter & Email Communications
If you subscribe to our newsletter, your email address is processed through Brevo, our email service provider. Brevo stores and processes your email address on our behalf to deliver our communications.
You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link included in every newsletter email, or by contacting us directly at info@levik.me. Once you unsubscribe, we stop sending you newsletters, and your email is removed from our active mailing list. Brevo may retain backup copies for a limited period in accordance with its own retention policies.
For more information about how Brevo handles your data, please review Brevo’s Privacy Policy.
5. Comments and Gravatar
If you leave a comment on the Site, the comment and its metadata (name, email address, website if provided, IP address, and browser user agent) are retained to help detect spam and moderate the discussion. If you use an email address associated with Gravatar, an anonymized string (a hash) of your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to display your profile picture. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible publicly next to your comment.
6. SmartBite Balance App
SmartBite Balance is a separate mobile application developed by LEVIK, available for download through the Apple App Store. SmartBite Balance is a standalone product with its own dedicated Privacy Policy and Support pages.
Key facts about SmartBite Balance:
- It does not require an account, name, email, or phone number
- It does not transmit your personal data to LEVIK’s servers
- Sync between your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch) is handled through your own private iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit — LEVIK has no access to this data
- SmartBite Pro subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple; LEVIK does not receive any payment information
Because SmartBite Balance is a separate application with its own data handling practices, it has its own dedicated Privacy Policy. For full details, please visit:
SmartBite Balance Legal & Support
The Privacy Policy on this page (levik.me) governs your use of the LEVIK website only. The SmartBite Balance app is governed by its own dedicated Privacy Policy linked above.
7. How We Share Information
We share information only with trusted third-party service providers who help us operate the Site and deliver our services. These may include:
- Brevo — email delivery and newsletter management
- Our website hosting provider — to host and serve the Site
- Analytics providers (such as Plausible Analytics) — to understand anonymous website traffic patterns
- Content delivery networks (CDNs) — to serve Site content efficiently
These providers only receive the information necessary to perform their functions and are contractually obligated to handle your data securely and in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
We may also disclose information when required to do so by law, in response to a valid legal request, to protect our rights or the rights of others, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of business assets (in which case you will be notified in advance).
8. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than the one in which you reside. Because LEVIK is based in Canada, personal data may be processed here and then transferred to our service providers, some of whom are based outside Canada (for example, in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or the United States).
When we transfer personal data internationally, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as:
- Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission
- Transfers to countries deemed adequate by the European Commission or Canadian authorities
- Other legally recognized transfer mechanisms
By using the Site and providing us with your information, you acknowledge these international transfers.
9. Affiliate Links
Some pages on the Site may contain affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link, the destination website may use its own cookies or tracking technologies to track your visit and any resulting purchase. LEVIK does not receive your personal data from those third-party sites — we only receive aggregated or anonymized commission reporting. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of external websites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party sites you visit through our affiliate links.
10. Cookies & Tracking Technologies
We use minimal cookies and tracking on the Site. Some features, such as your theme preference (dark/light mode), rely on local storage. We use privacy-focused analytics tools that do not track personal data. For full details on our cookie usage, please see our Cookie Policy.
11. Do Not Track Signals
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) signal that you can enable to indicate your preference not to be tracked across websites. Because there is no industry consensus on how to interpret DNT signals, the Site does not currently respond to them. However, we do not track you across other websites regardless of whether you have DNT enabled.
12. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
We do not use your personal data to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models, and we prohibit third parties from using content published on the Site to train AI models without our express written consent. This includes articles, images, and any other creative work published on LEVIK.
13. Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy:
- Newsletter subscription data: retained until you unsubscribe
- Contact form submissions: retained for up to 12 months after the last interaction
- Blog comments: retained indefinitely unless you request deletion
- Technical and server logs: retained for up to 30 days for security and debugging purposes
- Aggregated, non-identifiable analytics data: may be retained for longer periods for historical analysis
- SmartBite app data: stored only on your mobile device within the app, never retained or backed up by LEVIK
When data is no longer needed, it is deleted or anonymized in a secure manner.
14. Your Rights Under GDPR
If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or other regions covered by GDPR-style laws, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right to access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Right to rectification: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information
- Right to erasure: Request deletion of your personal data (“right to be forgotten”)
- Right to restrict processing: Request that we limit how we use your data
- Right to data portability: Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format
- Right to object: Object to our processing of your data based on legitimate interests
- Right to withdraw consent: Withdraw previously given consent at any time
- Right to lodge a complaint: File a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@levik.me. We will respond to your request within 30 days, as required by GDPR.
15. Your Rights Under CCPA (California Residents)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) provides you with the following additional rights:
- Right to know: What personal information we collect, use, and disclose about you
- Right to delete: Request deletion of personal information we hold about you
- Right to opt out of sale: We do not sell personal information, but you have the right to opt out if this ever changes
- Right to non-discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights
- Right to correct: Request correction of inaccurate personal information
To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us at info@levik.me. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request.
16. Your Rights Under Canadian Privacy Law (PIPEDA)
If you are a resident of Canada, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws (including Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act) give you the following rights:
- Right to know: You may ask whether we hold personal information about you and request access to that information
- Right to correction: You may request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal information
- Right to withdraw consent: You may withdraw your consent to our collection, use, or disclosure of your personal information at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions
- Right to challenge compliance: You may challenge our compliance with PIPEDA by contacting us directly, or by filing a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta
LEVIK is based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and operates under Canadian privacy laws in addition to the international standards described above (GDPR and CCPA). To exercise any of these rights or to ask a question about how we handle your personal data, contact us at info@levik.me.
17. Automated Decision-Making
We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal effects or similarly significant effects concerning you.
18. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures include:
- HTTPS encryption across the entire Site
- Secure hosting infrastructure with regular security updates
- Limited access to personal data on a need-to-know basis
- Regular backups and security monitoring
However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
19. Data Breach Notification
In the unlikely event of a data breach that affects your personal information and poses a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the relevant supervisory authorities as required by applicable law (including within 72 hours under GDPR, and in accordance with PIPEDA’s breach notification requirements under Canadian law).
20. Children’s Privacy
The Site is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at info@levik.me and we will promptly delete the information.
21. Third-Party Websites
The Site may contain links to external websites that are not operated by LEVIK. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the privacy practices or content of third-party sites. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any websites you visit.
22. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, services, or legal requirements. The most current version will always be available on this page, and the “Last updated” date will reflect any changes. For significant changes, we may notify subscribers by email or display a prominent notice on the Site. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
23. Contact Us
If you have any questions, concerns, or requests regarding this Privacy Policy or your personal data, please contact us at info@levik.me. We aim to respond to all privacy-related inquiries within a reasonable timeframe.

Although we base our articles on peer-reviewed research and information from reputable medical institutions (such as the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, the NIH, and the CDC), we are not healthcare providers, and the content should not be used to diagnose or treat any health condition.
Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional before making any changes to your diet, exercise routine, medication, or health regimen — especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition, are pregnant or nursing, or are taking prescription medications. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you have read on the Site.
Your reliance on any information provided on the Site is strictly at your own risk.
7. Affiliate Links and Disclosures
Some articles on the Site contain affiliate links. This means that if you click on one of these links and make a purchase on a third-party website, LEVIK may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.
We only recommend products and services we have genuinely researched, used, or believe provide value to our readers. Affiliate relationships do not influence our editorial content, our opinions, or the scientific conclusions we draw in our articles. Articles that critique products or debunk claims are written with the same honesty regardless of whether affiliate links are present.
We comply with applicable advertising disclosure guidelines, including the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines on affiliate disclosures and Canadian Competition Bureau guidance on influencer marketing and endorsements. For the full details of how we handle data from third parties and affiliate partners, please see our Privacy Policy.

The Site may contain links to external websites, services, or resources that are not owned or controlled by LEVIK. We provide these links for informational purposes only and as a convenience to our readers.
We have no control over the content, privacy practices, or terms of third-party websites. SmartBite Balance is a separate mobile application developed by LEVIK and distributed through the Apple App Store. It is a standalone product with its own terms, privacy practices, and support resources.
These Terms of Use apply to the levik.me website only. Your use of the SmartBite Balance app is governed by its own Privacy Policy, the App Store Terms of Service, and any in-app terms that may apply.
Important notes about SmartBite Balance:
- It is not medical advice. SmartBite Balance is an educational tool based on general nutrition and fitness principles, not a medical device or substitute for professional healthcare. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before making health decisions based on its output, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, have a history of eating disorders, or take prescription medications.
- It does not collect personal data. The app does not require an account and does not transmit your information to LEVIK’s servers. Sync between Apple devices is handled through your own private iCloud account.

If and when such services become available, they may be subject to additional terms and conditions, which will be presented to you at the point of purchase or sign-up. Your use of those services will be subject to those additional terms.
12. Accuracy of Information
We make reasonable efforts to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and currency of the information published on the Site. We cannot guarantee that all content on the Site is completely accurate, up-to-date, or free from errors or omissions at all times.
If you notice an error in one of our articles, or have information suggesting an article should be updated, please let us know at info@levik.me. We take accuracy seriously and will review and correct errors where appropriate.
13. Disclaimer of Warranties

- Implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement
- Warranties that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free from viruses or other harmful components
- Warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of any content on the Site
We do not warrant that the Site will meet your specific requirements or expectations.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, LEVIK, its owners, employees, and contributors shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or relating to:
- Your access to or use of, or inability to access or use, the Site

- Any actions you take based on information published on the Site or output from SmartBite
- Any interactions with third-party websites or services linked from the Site
This limitation applies whether the alleged liability is based on contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or any other legal theory, and whether or not we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages, so some of these limitations may not apply to you. In such cases, our liability will be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.
15. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless LEVIK, its owners, employees, and contributors from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or connected with your use of the Site, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.
16. Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Site at any time, without notice, for any reason — including but not limited to a breach of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Site will immediately cease. All provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and indemnification) will remain in effect.
17. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or your use of the Site shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of the Province of Alberta, located in Edmonton, Canada, unless otherwise required by applicable consumer protection laws of your jurisdiction.
If you are accessing the Site from outside Canada, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for compliance with your local laws. LEVIK makes no representation that the content on the Site is appropriate or available for use in locations outside Canada.
18. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unlawful, void, or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, that provision shall be severed from the Terms, and the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
19. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and LEVIK regarding your use of the Site and supersede any prior agreements or communications.
20. Contact
If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback about these Terms, please contact us at info@levik.me. We aim to respond to all inquiries within a reasonable timeframe.
Cookie Policy
Last updated: April 2026
This Cookie Policy explains how LEVIK (“we”, “our”, or “us”) uses cookies and similar tracking technologies on the website levik.me (the “Site”). It explains what these technologies are, why we use them, and your rights to control their use.
By continuing to use the Site, you consent to the use of cookies as described in this policy. If you do not agree, you can disable cookies through your browser settings or discontinue use of the Site.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, to remember your preferences, to improve user experience, and to provide information to site owners.
In addition to cookies, we may use related technologies such as:
- Local storage: a way for websites to store small amounts of data in your browser, similar to cookies but with larger capacity
- Session storage: temporary data that is cleared when you close your browser tab
- Web beacons and pixels: tiny graphics embedded in pages or emails that track whether content was viewed (we do not currently use these)
For simplicity, we refer to all of these technologies collectively as “cookies” throughout this policy.
2. How We Use Cookies
LEVIK takes a minimal approach to cookies. We do not use cookies for behavioral advertising, cross-site tracking, or selling data to third parties. The cookies and similar technologies we use fall into the following categories:
3. Types of Cookies We Use
Analytics Cookies
We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-first analytics tool that is fundamentally different from traditional analytics services like Google Analytics. Plausible:
- Does not use cookies at all
- Does not collect or store any personal information
- Does not track you across websites
- Does not build user profiles
- Fully complies with GDPR, CCPA, PIPEDA, and PECR without requiring a cookie banner
Plausible provides us with aggregated, anonymous statistics about how the Site is used — such as which articles are most popular, where visitors come from, and how long they stay — without ever identifying individual visitors. For more details, you can review Plausible’s data policy.
Third-Party Cookies
Some content on the Site may be embedded from third-party services (such as YouTube videos, social media posts, or other widgets). When you interact with these embeds, those third-party services may set their own cookies. We do not control these cookies, and they are governed by the privacy policies of the respective third parties.
Specifically, the following third-party services may set cookies when their content is loaded:
- YouTube (if videos are embedded) — Google Privacy Policy
- Gravatar (if you use it for comment avatars) — Automattic Privacy Policy
- Affiliate partners (if you click an affiliate link) — subject to their own cookie practices
Marketing and Advertising Cookies
LEVIK does not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or behavioral tracking of any kind. We do not run ads on the Site and do not share data with advertising networks.
4. How Long Cookies Last
Cookies can be either:
- Session cookies: Temporary cookies that are deleted when you close your browser
- Persistent cookies: Cookies that remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them
Most of the data we store on the website (such as your theme preference) is persistent so we can remember your choices between visits. Session-level data is cleared automatically when you close your browser.
5. Your Choices and How to Control Cookies
You have several options for controlling cookies and local storage on the Site:
Through your browser settings:
Most browsers allow you to view, block, or delete cookies through their settings. Instructions for the most common browsers:
Please note: disabling essential cookies or local storage may affect how the Site functions. For example, your dark or light mode preference will reset to the default every time you visit.
Through third-party opt-outs:
For cookies set by third parties (such as YouTube or Google), you can opt out through the respective service’s privacy controls. Many third-party services also honor the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out tool and the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out tool.
Browser Do Not Track signals:
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting. As noted in our Privacy Policy, there is no industry consensus on how to interpret DNT signals, so we do not currently respond to them. However, we do not engage in cross-site tracking regardless of your DNT setting.
6. Cookies and Mobile Devices
Mobile browsers also support cookies. You can manage cookies on mobile devices through your browser settings, similar to desktop browsers. On mobile, some additional controls may be available through your device’s privacy settings.
7. Updates to This Cookie Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, the technologies we implement, or legal and regulatory requirements. The most current version will always be available on this page, and the “Last updated” date will reflect any changes. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
8. More Information
For more detailed information about how we handle your personal data generally, please see our Privacy Policy. For general information about cookies and how they work, you can visit allaboutcookies.org.
9. Contact
If you have any questions about our use of cookies or this Cookie Policy, please contact us at info@levik.me.
